Canadian Facts

Numerous sites on the Internet provide basic factual information about Canada. 

Statistics Canada provides a great deal of information on-line, including the 2001 Census and its section Canadian Statistics which provides the latest information about:
  • The Economy 
  • Education 
  • Environment 
  • Families, households, and housing 
  • Geography 
  • Government spending, employment, and elections 
  • Health 
  • Justice and crime 
  • Population 

The main Government of Canada site posts material on a wide range of Canadian information relating to Canadian culture, government, history, economy, and geography. 

You can get an idea of the ethnic composition of Canada's population by viewing Statistics Canada's table of the largest ethnic groups reported in  the 2001 Census.

Indian and Northern Affairs Canada has posted a collection of facts about aboriginal people in Canada

Natural Resources Canada provides access to a number of specialized maps in its Atlas of Canada project. For example, you can see the a map of the 2004 federal election results on a national or regional basis. 

Other interestinf features are found in the historical section, with maps that show how Canada's boundaries have expanded since 1867  as well as the distribution of aboriginal peoples in the 17th through 19th centuries.


 

HISTORY

The National Library of Canada maintains an interesting site on Canadian Confederation

Beverly Leeck of the University of Alberta provides links to a range of sources on Canadian history, among her Canadiana collection

An interesting list of Important Moments in Canadian History has been compiled Robert Belton at UBC Okanagan.
